
Carolyn Greer is a Highly Specialist Advanced Practitioner Speech and Language Therapist
in the area of voice and upper airway conditions. She is the Clinical and Service Lead of the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Voice and Throat Service in the South Eastern Trust and runs a private Voice and Upper Airway disorders clinic.
A graduate of Ulster University, Carolyn has a career spanning over 30 years in SLT, working in health trusts in England, and three of the health trusts in Northern Ireland.
In this time, she has accomplished specialisms in ENT and neurology, working with complex speech, voice and swallowing disorders. Within her specialism of Voice and Throat disorders, Carolyn assesses and manages functional voice conditions caused by hyperfunctional voice use and stress, organic voice disorders as a result of physiological cause, illness or surgery, and throat conditions such as chronic cough, Inducible laryngeal obstruction, hypersensitive larynx and Globus sensation.
Amongst her clinical skills in her specialist area, she has post-graduate training in Voicecraft therapy, semi-occluded vocal tract therapy, laryngeal manipulation, neurolinguistic programming, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for voice disorders and solution focused brief therapy.
Carolyn works with all client groups and has a special interest in Functional voice disorders related to hyperfunctional voice use, particularly for professional voice users such as teachers/educators.
Carolyn developed and runs the first SLT Led ENT Parallel clinic in Northern Ireland working as an endoscopist performing laryngoscopy at advanced practitioner level. This is an award-winning laryngoscopy clinic, where patients are seen by the SLT in place of the ENT doctor.
Carolyn regularly presents on the role of SLTs at advanced practice level and acts as a trainer, mentor and specialist advisor for voice and throat disorders regionally.
She is an active member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice network, and The Clinical Excellence Network Voice NI.
Carolyn is a licenced LSVT LOUD practitioner, co-leading Speak LOUD, an intensive Speech and Language Therapy programme for people with Parkinson’s Disease and runs her own successful private Voice and Throat clinic for patients with voice and upper airway disorders.

Certifications
As a Specialist advanced practitioner clinician, Carolyn is trained in a range of techniques for voice and upper airway including voice and throat exercises, voicecraft techniques, semi-occluded vocal tract therapy, laryngeal manipulation therapy, accent method, and multiple counselling techniques such as Cognitive behavioural therapy for voice disorders, Neurolinguistic programming, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Solution focused brief therapy.
Carolyn is a fully registered UK Speech and Language Therapist. She is a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, a member of The Health Care Professionals Counsil, and a member of The Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice.
Experience
With over 30 years of experience in clinical and therapeutic settings, Carolyn has worked with diverse populations, with both children and adults facing various voice and upper airways challenges. She has worked with both functional voice and upper airway issues as a result of tension in the throat from stress, anxiety, chronic pain, and organic voice disorders as a result of vocal cord lesions such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, post surgical scarring, vocal cord paralysis and post cancer treatment impact. She also manages conditions of the upper airway (throat) disorders such as throat tightening, increased throat sensitivity, coughing, throat clearing, a feeling of a lump in the throat, can develop from many causes such as viruses, habitual muscle response from stress and anxiety, and multiple medical history factors.
Approach
Carolyn uses a client-centred approach, integrating evidence-based practices, specialised techniques, and tailored therapy to address each person's unique voice, throat and communication needs and goals. Self-efficacy is promoted from your first visit, so you feel empowered and enabled to manage your voice and throat care into the future.
Prior to your voice and throat assessment it is necessary to have an examination of your larynx by an ENT Consultant. This is to inform the Speech and Language Therapist and ensure your therapy is tailored to manage your condition.
Training/Presentations
Carolyn has provided training and presentations regionally, nationally and internationally. Audiences include colleagues in Speech and Language Therapy, Allied Health Professions, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) medical colleagues, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
Training and presentations also are valuable for professional voice users such as teachers, all educators, professional speakers, and performers.
Supervision/mentoring
Carolyn provides professional supervision and mentoring to Speech and Language Therapy colleagues, adhering to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy (RCSLT) and Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) guidelines to ensure strong governance and safety within the specialism of Speech and Language Therapy Voice and Upper Airway conditions.
